INC Election: Okaba Says Reversal of Disqualifications Mere Rumours

Prof. Benjamin Okaba, the President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), says he is not aware of any official communication reversing the earlier disqualification of some candidates by the election committee.

Okaba told newsmen in Yenagoa on Thursday that the decision of the election committee stands until an official communication states otherwise.

The president was reacting to comments in some quarters that the earlier disqualification of two candidates for the March 7 election had been reversed.

“For now, these comments are mere rumours. We must be officially communicated to by the election committee, and reasons must be given if such a decision is true,” he said.

“As the INC president, I have not received any official communication conveying such a change of decision,” he insisted.

Okaba commended the election committee for its plan to transmit the results of the poll electronically and in real time.

He said the system would ensure the immediate display of results for transparency and credibility, adding that it is “in line with global best practices.”

The INC president expressed confidence in the use of technology for the election because of its promise of credibility, reliability, and transparency.
