Dickson Dumps PDP for NDC

Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, announced his defection during a media briefing in Abuja, citing the prolonged internal crisis within the PDP as the major reason for his decision.

According to him, the persistent leadership tussles and divisions within the party have weakened its cohesion and made it increasingly difficult for members to operate effectively.

“The persistent internal crisis in the PDP has created deep divisions, weakening the umbrella and making it increasingly difficult for many members, including myself, to continue to function effectively within the party,” Dickson said.

The senator explained that after extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders across Bayelsa West Senatorial District, he decided to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress, which he described as a platform that aligns with his vision for democratic reforms and national development.

Dickson served as a member of the House of Representatives representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2012. He later served as governor of Bayelsa State from 2012 to 2020 before he was elected senator representing Bayelsa West in 2020.

He assured his constituents that his defection would not affect his commitment to effective representation, emphasizing that his focus remains on promoting development, strengthening democratic institutions, and advancing the interests of the Niger Delta region.

Dickson also expressed optimism that the Nigeria Democratic Congress would provide a credible alternative political platform capable of addressing the country’s challenges and deepening democratic governance.

Political observers believe the senator’s move could influence the political landscape in Bayelsa State and the wider Niger Delta region, given his influence and longstanding role in the state’s politics.
