Cheers erupt at Bayelsa International Airport as a newly acquired ATR-72/600 aircraft lands for its inaugural flight. The flight, carrying Governor Douye Diri and key state and regional leaders, marks a major step in improving air travel and economic connectivity for the state. The aircraft is set to be renamed ‘Air Bayelsa’ or ‘Bayelsa Air’ before commencing commercial operations.

The plane departed from the domestic wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 09:30hrs with about 50 passengers, including the governor, Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah, members of the Bayelsa National Assembly Caucus, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr. Sam Ogbuku, and other dignitaries. It landed at 10:40hrs, greeted by jubilant crowds and a water cannon salute from airport fire trucks.

Governor Diri described the event as historic and highlighted the administration’s commitment to connecting Bayelsa to other parts of Nigeria and expanding economic opportunities. He acknowledged the contributions of former leaders, particularly the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who conceptualized the airport, and former Governor Seriake Dickson, who brought the project to completion. The governor also recognized the support of Premium Trust Bank, Pioneer Airlines, and the Bayelsa State House of Assembly in facilitating the aircraft acquisition.

Air Vice‑Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, said the aircraft will operate daily flights to Lagos and Abuja and will also serve other Niger Delta states. Calmday explained that the service will strengthen regional connectivity, enhance commerce, support trade and investment by linking Bayelsa to major Nigerian cities.

Captain Henry Ungbuku, Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, said the airline will reflect the aspirations of Bayelsa and the wider Niger Delta region.
Emmanuel Emefienim, CEO of Premium Trust Bank, described the acquisition as a strategic achievement, emphasizing the partnership between the bank and the government.
Also speaking, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri commended the governor’s initiative and urged the government to ensure proper management and sustainability of flight operations to maximize the aircraft’s impact.
Lending his voice, Dr. Sam Ogbuku, Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission, welcomed the acquisition, noting its potential to connect Bayelsa with the rest of the country, and pledged the commission’s support to ensure the airline’s success.
Applauding the governor, Senator Konbowei Benson, on behalf of the Bayelsa National Assembly Caucus, praised the administration’s vision and promised continued legislative support.
Dr. Boladei Igali, PANDEF National Chairman, also expressed pride in the achievement and pledged ongoing backing for the state government’s initiatives.
The inaugural flight marks a significant milestone for Bayelsa, signaling a new era of commerce, tourism, and regional connectivity, and leaving residents optimistic about the state’s aviation future.
