20 Rescued in MV Chimba Express Fire

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) ‘OSE’ has rescued 20 crew members from the Motor Vessel (MV) ‘Chimba Express’ following a fire outbreak along the Calabar Channel.

The incident occurred on Monday, 22 December 2025, when NNS ‘OSE’, during a routine patrol, received a distress call at about 1:00 p.m. The vessel was sailing from Gabon to Calabar, carrying scrap materials and other logistics, with a crew of 21, comprising 14 Nigerians and 7 Cameroonians.

Upon arrival at the scene, naval personnel observed thick smoke billowing from the vessel. Immediate rescue operations were launched, with crew members who had abandoned ship, as well as those trapped on deck, evacuated using life buoys. Twenty crew members were successfully rescued and given first aid.

However, the vessel’s Chief Engineer, who reportedly jumped into the water out of fear of a possible explosion, is still missing. A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing.

The rescue effort was supported by personnel from Forward Operating Base IBAKA, Naval Security Station 030 Houseboat, and local fishermen. NNS ‘OSE’ also deployed portable pumps to help contain the fire, which affected the midship and aft sections of the vessel.

Speaking on behalf of the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship ‘VICTORY’, the Base Operations Officer, Lieutenant Commander K. K. Ahunanya, reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maritime assets, in line with the mission of the Chief of the Naval Staff.
