EFCC Invitation: Sylva Writes, Requests Date for Appearance

Chief Timipre Sylva, former Minister of State for Petroleum and ex-Governor of Bayelsa State, has written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) requesting a formal date for his appearance in connection with an alleged fraud case.

In a letter dated November 24 and received by the EFCC on November 26, Sylva criticized the commission for declaring him wanted over an alleged $14.8 million fraud, while explaining that he is currently receiving urgent medical care for a life-threatening condition. He stressed that he is in constant consultation with his medical team to determine whether he could interrupt treatment to present himself for interrogation.

He requested a “mutually agreed” date for his appearance, emphasizing that only in good health can he respond fully and responsibly to any allegations, which he firmly denies.

Chief Sylva also recounted the emotional toll of recent events, describing the period as “extraordinary and bewildering” for his family, supporters, and associates. He referred to unverified accusations linking him to an alleged plot to undermine the constitutional authority of the President, which culminated in a high-profile security operation at his residence, during which several individuals, including staff and drivers, were detained.

The former minister said he was “deeply surprised and profoundly unsettled” to learn he had been publicly declared wanted on November 10, 2025, in relation to an alleged $24.8 million fraud.

He noted that he had previously been formally invited by the EFCC in December 2024 regarding the same matter, provided all necessary explanations, and was granted administrative bail, adding that no further invitation or correspondence had been issued to him since then.

Chief Sylva strongly refuted claims that he had jumped bail, calling the allegation “false and misleading.” He warned that the recent developments, including public announcements and security actions, risk being misinterpreted by the public and could be perceived as politically motivated.

He concluded by reiterating his commitment to cooperating with lawful authorities while expressing concern about the handling of the case, stating that he appears to have been targeted since the beginning of the current administration.
