BREAKING: TOBI AMUSAN WINS SILVER IN 100M HURDLES, SECURES NIGERIA’S FIRST TOKYO 2025 MEDAL

Nigeria’s sprint sensation, Tobi Amusan, has won a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships, delivering Nigeria’s first medal of the competition.

The race, which took place on Monday, September 15, 2025, saw Amusan clock an impressive 12.29 seconds to finish second behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who set a new national record of 12.24 seconds to claim gold. The United States’ Grace Stark took bronze with a time of 12.34 seconds, while fellow American Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44 seconds.

Despite a slow start, the Ijebu Ode-born athlete recovered brilliantly, pushing hard to close in on Kambundji before the Swiss hurdler edged ahead at the finish line.

Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel advanced to the semi-final of the men’s 400m hurdles after winning heat 5 in 48.37 seconds, while Charles Edward Godfred bowed out of the men’s long jump with a best leap of 7.79m, which was not enough to reach the final.
